The sixth series of the revived Doctor Who (the second for Matt Smith as the Doctor) has been cut in half. The first half screened in early 2011, and as viewers wait for the second half to start screening in late August, the first half has been released on DVD. This season, so far, is a definite improvement on the previous. It feels more cohesive and is taking the series into new and interesting territory.

It seems that the BBC are no longer content with releasing classic episodes of Doctor Who on DVD. Now they’re re-releasing stories that have already been on DVD. And so I find myself with divided feelings. I can’t help but think this is simply the marketing, money-making machine trying to squeeze more from the fans. And yet, there are a wealth of new extra features on these discs which, as a rabid, long-time fan, I really enjoyed watching.

With the rebirth of the Doctor Who series in 2005, it has become the done thing to produce a yearly Christmas Special — an extra-long episode with a rather tenuous link to the holiday season. Generally, the Christmas Specials have not been the best examples of what the series is capable of. The 2010 special, A Christmas Carol, now released on DVD, is without a doubt to best of the lot.
